Streams for Workers

Employment in eligible occupation needs to be valid and be from an employer in the Alberta or have employment in Alberta at the time of applying. The job must be included in the Alberta PNP occupations in demand list which involves jobs in the technology sector, health care, agriculture, construction among others

Streams for Entrepreneurs

Must have a business plan, enough capital to start the business and some degree of business or management experience. As for some of the streams such as International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream, the applicant must have completed an eligible program at an Alberta post-secondary institution.

AAIP: Streams for Workers

The AAIP has 4 Streams for Foreign Workers who are living and working in Alberta or plan to live and work here:




1. Tourism & Hospitality Stream


The Tourism and Hospitality Stream is for temporary foreign workers who are already working full-time in Alberta in the tourism and hospitality sector and have a full-time job offer from a qualifying Alberta employer in an eligible occupation. Candidates must have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The Tourism and Hospitality Stream in Alberta provides a pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers in the tourism and hospitality sectors.



2. Opportunity Stream

This allows foreign workers and international graduates from approved Alberta institutions to apply for provincial nomination. Applicants need a valid work permit, must work in an eligible Alberta occupation, and meet language requirements (CLB 4 or 5, depending on the job). They must also have a high school diploma and at least 12 months of work experience in Alberta or 24 months in Canada. Applications are submitted online through the AAIP portal with a CAD $500 fee.



3. Express Entry Stream

Alberta Express Entry Stream – Qualified candidates may be invited to apply for nomination who have profiles in the federal Express Entry pool that are aligned with minimum requirements, and provincial economic, sector, and occupational priorities. There are also dedicated pathways operated in this stream for health care professionals, technology workers, and police occupations.



4. Rural Renewal Stream

Communities must apply for and become designated before they can recruit and endorse qualified candidates. Temporary foreign workers who have a job offer from an Alberta employer in a designated community, and an endorsement letter from a designated community, can then apply for an AAIP nomination.

The AAIP has 4 Streams for Entrepreneurs who plan to live in Alberta and buy or start a business in the province.

FAQs & Tips

Only after receiving NOI are candidates are given a deadline before which they must submit a complete application. Later on, if the candidate’s application is approved, the province notifies acceptance on their IRCC account.

The AINP application process usually takes between 12 -16  weeks. The Alberta entrepreneur applications have a multi-step process that can take more than a year to complete entirely.

Immigrating to Alberta is not a one-size-fits-all solution. What may be easy for one candidate may be difficult for another. It is therefore advisable to choose the stream that is right for you depending on your specific situation.

Yes. You do not need a job offer for four of Alberta’s five immigration streams.

However, having a job offer may increase your chances under the Alberta Express Entry Stream

When applying under the International Graduate Category, the candidate must have a permanent and full-time job offer from
an Alberta employer. The employer must also complete an application form under the International Graduate Category.
The Postgraduate Worker Category offers international students who have graduated from a recognized post-secondary
institution in Alberta, and are working full-time in Alberta for an Alberta employer, the opportunity to apply without an employer.

This stream is a process in which individuals with sufficient farming experience and personal funds to purchase and develop a farm in the province of Alberta can apply for permanent residence. These applicants must be farm owners/operators, and they must plan to reside in Alberta, where they will purchase or manage a farming business.
