According to a report, Australian Assistant Minister for Immigration Matt Thistlethwaite stated on Monday that nearly 40,000 Indians have applied for just 1,000 positions under the country’s new Working Holiday Maker visa program, which permits individuals aged 18 to 30 to study, work, or travel in Australia for a 12-month period.

The visa ballot process began on October 1 and will remain open until the end of the month. Applicants will be chosen randomly from the ballot, and those selected can then apply for a temporary visa, allowing them to start their stay in Australia early next year.

40,000 Indians Apply for 1,000 Spots in Australia’s Working Holiday Maker Visa

The great thing about the Working Holiday Maker visa is that it doesn’t limit the types of jobs you can take. So far, 40,000 applications have been received for the 1,000 available spots. While many are likely to work in hospitality and agriculture, participants can also choose to take short courses or enhance their English skills,” Thistlethwaite told PTI.

The minister highlighted that this visa provides an opportunity for applicants to experience Australian culture while gaining work experience in diverse sectors. He expressed hope that their time in Australia would encourage them to return in the future, either through a student visa or as skilled workers.

The Australian Prime Minister further emphasized that the visa program offers young Indians a “taste of what life in Australia is like,” potentially encouraging them to return later on a student or skilled worker visa.

Mr. Thistlethwaite highlighted the growing partnership between Australia and India.”The Prime Minister used his experience and friendship with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to ensure improved and increased opportunities for young people from both communities to experience each other’s cultures,” he said. An official confirmed that the program will run every year.

Commencement of new arrangements

As of 1 October 2024, a new pre-application process has been introduced for high-demand Work and Holiday eligible partner countries for the 2024-2025 program year.

Registrations for the first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa ballots for China, Vietnam, and India also opened on 1 October 2024.

Each year, a ballot process will be conducted for each participating country. The registration and selection periods may vary for each country involved.

The Working Holiday Maker program, including annual grant limits, is established through bilateral agreements with each partner country. The new pre-application process for high-demand countries will not impact these arrangements.
