Changing or Extending Your Work Permit | All you need to know
What Happens After You Apply to Extend or Change Your Work Permit?
1. Proof You Can Keep Working
Once you apply online to extend or change your work permit (except PGWP), you’ll receive a letter in your account. This letter serves as proof that you’re authorized to continue working, provided you meet the eligibility requirements. You can either print the letter or show it along with your current work permit.
2. How Long Does the Letter Last?
The letter you receive will have an expiry date, typically 180 days from the day they get your application. This date is set to match the service standard for processing your application. The expiry date is important because employers and health insurance providers may need proof that you’re still allowed to work.
3. What if Your Application Takes Longer to Process?
Even if the letter expires, you can continue working as long as they haven’t made any decision on your application. If your employer or others need proof, you can share this web page with them or contact us directly if your employer requires more information.
4. If You Applied on Paper
If you applied to extend or change your work permit on paper, you won’t get the same letter. Instead, you’re still authorized to work as long as you applied before your current permit expired. In this case, you can show your employer proof that you submitted the application. This could include:
- A copy of your application
- Proof of payment
- Tracking information from the postal or courier service
5. What Happens After Approval?
If your application is approved, you’ll receive either:
- An extension of your current work permit or
- A new work permit with different conditions (for example, changes to the type of work, employer, or location).
6. Start Working While Waiting for Your Permit
Once your work permit is approved, you’ll get a notification in your online account. You can begin working as soon as you receive this note, without waiting for the physical work permit to arrive in the mail.
Conclusion
While waiting for your work permit extension or change, you’re still authorized to work under the same conditions as your original permit. Make sure to keep track of the expiry date on your letter and share the necessary documentation with your employer if needed.
