How Indian Students Can Apply for Canadian Visas After SDS Ends
What Indian Students Need to Know After SDS Program Ends
Canada has closed its Student Direct Stream (SDS) program for students from 14 countries, including India, China, and Pakistan, starting November 9. While this has raised concerns among Indian students, immigration experts argue that the regular visa route still offers good chances for approval. Moreover, Canada remains a popular destination for Indian students.
How Indian Students Can Apply for a Canadian Visa
Indian students can apply for Canadian visas through the regular, non-SDS category, which is more flexible. Unlike the SDS route, students only need to pay six months’ tuition upfront and prove they have enough funds for living expenses. This makes the process more affordable for those who couldn’t meet the SDS requirements. While the GIC is still an option, it’s not mandatory. Visa consultant Aman Parmar notes that this change makes studying in Canada more accessible, especially for students who couldn’t afford the full tuition upfront.
What Challenges Should Students Be Aware Of?
Although students no longer need to pay a full year’s tuition upfront, they must still prove they can financially support their stay in Canada. However, the required amount is now much lower—around Rs 5 to 6 lakh is enough for many colleges, compared to the much higher amount required under the SDS program.
In addition, students must ensure their visa application is strong. This means having a good academic record and a clear plan for their studies. Visa officers focus on students who are serious about their education and have a realistic plan for future success in Canada.
How Does the SDS Closure Affect Indian Students?
The SDS program, launched in 2018, allowed faster processing of student visa applications for admission to Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada. It required students to pay one year’s tuition upfront and show proof of funds through a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) worth $20,635. The program was popular among Indian students, but with its closure, they will now need to apply through the regular visa route.
Already Applied or Planning to Apply?
If you submitted your application through SDS or NSE before 2:00 pm EST on November 8, 2024, it will still be processed under the old program. However, any applications submitted after that time will follow the regular study permit process and will not be expedited.
What Now?
If you were planning to apply through SDS or NSE, or if you’re unsure about how this change affects you, it’s important to understand the regular study permit application process. Make sure you have all the required documents, including proof of financial support, acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution, and the new provincial attestation letter. For detailed requirements, refer to the Government of Canada website.
Even though SDS and NSE are no longer available, Canada still welcomes international students. If you need help navigating the study permit process or have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Canadim for support with your applicatio
How Does the IELTS/PTE Requirement Change with SDS Closure?
Under the SDS program, students needed to achieve a minimum of six bands in IELTS or 60 marks in PTE to meet the English language proficiency requirement. However, under the non-SDS application route, students have more flexibility. Even if they do not meet these specific scores, they can still apply with an overall score of 6 bands across modules, and 5.5 bands in individual modules.
Moreover, experts suggest that a strong score can always strengthen an applicant’s chances. Additionally, any other proof of English proficiency accepted by Canada, along with a solid academic record, can further enhance a student’s application.
Conclusion
With the closure of the SDS program, Indian students can still apply for Canadian study permits through the regular visa route, which is more flexible and affordable. While they no longer need to pay a full year’s tuition upfront, students must still show they can support themselves financially. A strong academic record and a clear study plan will strengthen their application. Although the IELTS/PTE requirements have become more flexible, students must still prove their English proficiency. Despite these changes, Canada remains a popular and accessible destination for Indian students, and support is available to help navigate the new process.
