Northwest Territories Nominee Program Reopens for 2025 Applications

When to Apply for the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP)
If you’re a foreign national and want to move to Canada through the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP), you need to apply between 9 am MT on February 27 and 5 pm MT on March 6 for the 2025 intake.
How Many Applications Will Be Processed?
The NTNP will process 90 new applications for 2025, plus 60 applications from 2024, making a total of 150 applications.
What Happens if Too Many Applications Are Received?
If the NTNP gets more applications than they can handle, they will randomly select which applications to process. They will then notify the selected applicants by email.
How Will Applications Be Processed?
Once the intake closes, the NTNP will process the selected applications in order of when their work permits expire.
Why Are Changes Being Made to the NTNP?
The NWT government made changes to balance the needs of employers who need workers with expiring permits, recognize workers who have been with their employers for a long time, and help NWT employers with different needs.
What Are the Changes to NTNP Streams?
There are different “streams” or categories in the NTNP, and they have new rules this year.
Employer-Driven Stream
This stream allows NWT employers to hire foreign workers and help them get permanent residence (PR). But only the employer can apply, not the worker directly. There are three categories in this stream:
- Entry Level / Semi-Skilled Occupations
- Skilled Worker
- NWT Express Entry
For these categories, applicants must have work experience in the same job and with the same employer right before applying.
Additionally, there will be reserved applications for workers in communities outside Yellowknife, with 5 applications for each of the Entry Level and Skilled Worker categories.
Category | Allocation | Highlighted eligibility |
---|---|---|
The Entry Level / Semi-Skilled Occupations | 35 | In addition to meeting all other eligibility criteria, applicants must have: - An expiring work permit in 2025; and - Been working full-time in the NWT for at least 12 months before applying. |
Skilled Worker OR NWT Express Entry | 35 | In addition to meeting all other eligibility criteria, applicants must have: - A full-time and permanent job offer with an NWT employer; - 12 months of work experience in the nominating occupation; and - An expiring work permit in 2025. OR - Been working full-time in the NWT at least 18 months before applying. |
Employer-Driven and Francophone Stream
There will be 10 more reserved applications for Francophone (French-speaking) candidates under the Employer-Driven and Francophone streams. To apply for this, candidates must:
- Be bilingual (speak both French and English)
- Have a job offer from an NWT employer
- Be eligible for any National Occupation Classification (NOC) TEER level job
Number of employees | Application allocation |
---|---|
1 to 10 NWT employees | 1 application |
11 to 49 NWT employees | 2 applications |
50+ NWT employees | 4 applications |
Why Did These Changes Happen?
The NTNP had to make these changes because of a 50% reduction in the number of people Canada is accepting for immigration in 2025. This decision came because of housing and affordability issues in Canada. As a result, immigration targets for many provinces, including NWT, were reduced.
