However, based on my discussions with several international students in Germany, being informed about the specific requirements of your chosen university can significantly aid in preparing a successful application.

Selecting the appropriate university and course is an important choice for students. More than 423 authorized higher education institutions offering more than 20,000 courses are located in Germany.
Clear goals for the future should be communicated to students, or they should get advice from counselors on the appropriate route of study. Two months before to the application deadline, they ought to start gathering data.

Requirements to Study in Germany for Indian Students

Higher Education

Your eligibility to study in Germany is determined by the “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” (HZB), meaning “higher education entrance qualification.” This qualification is essential for gaining admission and later obtaining a study visa for Germany. Higher Education Entrance Qualification (HZB)

International students can qualify for the HZB in the following ways:

• Completion of an internationally recognized secondary school diploma: This includes diplomas like the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the General Certificate of Education (GCE) with the required subject combinations for the chosen program.
• Success in national entrance exams: High rankings in national entrance exams can qualify students for specific fields. For example, Indian students with outstanding scores in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) may qualify for technology and natural sciences programs.
• Completion of one year at a university: Successfully completing one academic year in a relevant field at a recognized university in the applicant’s home country can also establish eligibility.

Official Transcripts and Certificates

All applicants are required to submit official transcripts and academic certificates from all previously attended educational institutions. If necessary, these documents should be translated into German by a certified translator.

Feststellungsprüfung (if applicable)

The Feststellungsprüfung is a final exam taken after completing a Studienkolleg, a preparatory course designed for international students whose secondary school qualifications do not directly meet the HZB requirements. If an applicant attends a Studienkolleg, passing the Feststellungsprüfung is essential for eligibility to enter a Bachelor’s program.

Proof of Language Proficiency

German is the primary language of instruction at most German universities. To demonstrate language competency, applicants must submit a recognized language test score. The two most common tests are:

The German Language Examination for University Entrance, or DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang), is intended primarily for foreign students who want to study in Germany.

To demonstrate your German language competency, you must have received at least a DSH-2 on this test.
Another well-known choice is TestDaF (Test Deutsch as Fremdsprache), which is the Test of German as a Foreign Language. It is required that you receive a level 4 on this test.

CV/Resume

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) or resume is commonly requested during the application process. This document should present a concise yet impactful overview of your educational background, relevant skills, and any work experience you have gained, painting a well-rounded picture of your qualifications.

• The student must be at least 18 years old.
• A certified 12th-grade mark sheet with a minimum of 50% is required.
• Depending on the course and university, the student should have SAT or ACT scores ranging from 400 to 1600.

• Four-year undergraduate degree: In some cases, a four to four-and-a-half-year undergraduate degree from a reputable institution is also accepted for certain courses.
• Official Transcripts and Academic Certificates
  You will need to submit your bachelor’s degree and academic transcripts as part of your application.
• APS Certificate (for Indian Students)
  Indian students are required to obtain an APS certificate, which verifies the authenticity of their bachelor’s qualifications.
• Proof of Language Proficiency
  To demonstrate language proficiency, you will need to provide scores from one of the following tests:
• For German:
  • DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang): Most master’s programs require a minimum of DSH 2 to prove German proficiency.
  • TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache): Achieving a level 4 in all parts of this test is necessary to demonstrate a high level of German proficiency.
• For English:
  • German universities accept several English language proficiency tests, such as IELTS or TOEFL. The minimum acceptable scores are IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL iBT 80.

Motivation Letter & Letters of Recommendation

• Letters of Recommendation: These can be written by your bachelor’s professors. If you have interned or volunteered during your undergraduate studies, recommendations from your supervisors can also be included.
• Motivation Letter: When writing a motivational letter for your master’s application, it’s important to highlight your achievements during your bachelor’s studies, such as internships, awards, or research experiences. This letter should showcase your commitment and readiness for advanced studies.
