Skilled Foreign Workers Get New Chance to Apply to Manitoba
What Happened This Week?
Manitoba invited skilled workers who are living outside of Canada to apply for a provincial nomination through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). These invitations were based on each candidate’s work experience, ranking scores, and whether they were part of special recruitment programs.
Details of the Recent MPNP Draw (May 29)
On May 29, Manitoba held a draw under the Skilled Worker Overseas stream and sent out 30 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs). These LAAs allow candidates to apply for a nomination, which can later help them get permanent residence in Canada.
To be selected in this draw, candidates needed:
- A minimum score of 606 using Manitoba’s special points system
- An invitation to submit a profile through a special recruitment initiative
Importantly, out of the 30 people invited, 5 had active Express Entry profiles and valid job seeker validation codes, which can further help in speeding up their immigration process.
Why Some High-Scoring Candidates Were Not Selected
Even though some candidates had scores above 606, they did not receive invitations. This could be because:
- They said they took a language test but didn’t include a valid test number, or their test results had expired
- They claimed they were invited through a recruitment program but didn’t include a valid invitation number
Therefore, it’s very important to enter complete and valid information in your profile.
What Are Strategic Recruitment Initiatives?
Strategic recruitment initiatives are special employer-driven programs. These programs help employers in Manitoba find skilled foreign workers when they can’t find local workers. In return, these programs help foreign workers get a chance to move to Canada permanently.
MPNP’s Situation in 2025
In 2025, the MPNP is facing fewer nomination spots. This is because Canada’s immigration department (IRCC) decided to cut the number of immigrants coming through provincial programs in half this year.
- Manitoba was given only 4,750 nomination spots for the whole year.
- So far, they’ve already used 1,840 nominations.
- That means, for the rest of the year, they have only 2,910 nominations left.
Still, some provinces have been able to negotiate more nomination spots with the federal government. So, there’s a chance Manitoba might also get more spots in the future.
