Trudeau Resigns and What Happens Next in Canada
Trudeau Resigns- A Major Leadership Shift
On January 6, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada, citing internal party struggles, criticism of his policies, and a growing lead by the opposition Conservative Party.
Why Did Trudeau Resign?
Trudeau explained that his resignation was necessary to give the Liberal Party a clear path forward. With internal battles within his own party and the Conservatives leading in polls, he felt he could no longer be the best option for Canada’s leadership.
Key Criticisms and Challenges
Trudeau faced criticism within his party, including from former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who resigned, accusing him of using “political gimmicks” like tax holidays and rebates. Relations with the U.S. also worsened, with Donald Trump proposing tariffs on Canadian imports and mocking Trudeau.
Trudeau Remains as PM Temporarily
Trudeau will stay as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen. He has also asked for the prorogation of parliament until March 2025.
What Happens After the Resignation?
The Liberal Party will hold meetings to select a new leader, with a national board meeting required within 27 days to discuss interim leadership and leadership vote dates. Trudeau led the party since 2013, but the future of Canadian politics is now uncertain.
