What are the chances of obtaining a work permit through the IEC this year?
The chances of receiving a work permit through the IEC this year.
Newcomers arriving in Canada often seek to obtain work permits. If they qualify, they may consider the International Experience Canada (IEC) program for this purpose. Unlike many other programs, the IEC offers candidates clearer information about their work permit chances.
What is the IEC program, and what types of work permits does it provide?
The International Experience Canada (IEC) program targets young adults aged 18-30/35 from countries with bilateral youth mobility agreements with Canada. These agreements enable youth from these countries to work and gain experience in Canada, mirroring opportunities available to Canadian youth in those partner countries.
IEC applicants can receive approval for their work permits in as little as six weeks. Therefore, it’s crucial to verify if your country has a bilateral youth mobility agreement with Canada, as eligibility criteria, including age limits, may vary.
The IEC program typically opens for applications in January and continues throughout the year until all work permits are allocated. It offers three streams through which work permits are issued:
1. Working Holiday Stream:
This stream is for individuals without a job offer who want to work for multiple employers and locations in Canada. It offers Open Work Permits (OWPs), allowing flexibility to work in various industries and locations across Canada.
2. Young Professionals Stream:
Designed for those with a job offer that contributes to their professional development. Work permits under this stream are tied to a specific employer and location, ensuring work is paid and not self-employment.
3. International Co-op (Internship) Stream:
Targeted at students enrolled in post-secondary institutions who require a work placement or internship in Canada to meet their academic obligations. Like the Young Professionals stream, these work permits are linked to a specific employer and location, ensuring compliance with local wage and labour laws.
Each stream sets out distinct requirements and advantages, offering young adults opportunities to reside, work, and acquire valuable experience in Canada through the IEC program.
Does the IEC offer assurance to applicants?
Unlike other Canadian immigration programs, the IEC offers candidates transparency regarding their work permit prospects based on their actions in the IEC pool—whether they are accepted, declined, or receive no response. Candidates start by creating a profile in the pool, and if selected, they receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for a work permit, enabling them to apply under their preferred stream.
How can I find out if I have a good chance of getting an IEC work permit this year?
If a candidate wants to assess their chances of getting an IEC work permit, they can use IRCC’s dedicated tool for IEC invitation rounds. By entering their nationality and desired work permit, the tool provides a likelihood rating, ranging from Excellent (80-99%) to Very low (1-19%). Additionally, candidates can see:
- The number of spots allocated to youth from their country.
- The invitations already issued to youth from their country in the current IEC season.
- The number of youths from their country already in the IEC candidate pool.
