What’s New for Home Care Workers in Canada

Home Care Workers’ Role in Canada
Home care workers are very important in Canada. They help take care of children, support seniors, and assist people with disabilities so they can live comfortably and independently. Without them, many people wouldn’t be able to stay active in their communities. These workers also help others join the workforce, which makes Canada’s economy stronger.
The New Immigration Pilots for Home Care Workers
Canada has made special programs (called “pilots”) to help home care workers in roles like home support or child care. These pilots will make it easier for home care workers to:
- Become permanent residents: Workers can settle in Canada for good.
- Find jobs: They can work for different employers.
There are two types of applicants:
- Workers in Canada (already in the country)
- Applicants not in Canada (from other countries)
At first, only the Workers in Canada category will be open. Later, the second group (those not in Canada) will have their chance to apply.
Permanent Residence in One Step
The new program will make it easier for home care workers to get permanent residency. They won’t need Canadian work experience in the field before applying. This means they can apply right away if they qualify, and they can also bring their families with them.
Lowered Language and Education Requirements
To make things easier, the new pilots will lower the language and education requirements. Now, applicants just need to:
- Language skills: Get a level 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) test (which is a basic level of English or French).
- Education: A high school diploma is enough.
However, they still need to have the right skills to do the job and be ready for work in Canada.
No Need for In-Canada Work Experience
The new program doesn’t require applicants to have worked in Canada before. But, they do need to have recent work experience in home care or have completed at least 6 months of home care training. Additionally, they will need to have a full-time job offer in home care from a Canadian employer (except in Quebec).
Flexible Job Options with a Job Offer
Home care workers can work in different places depending on what they need. They can get job offers from:
- Private households (people who need help at home)
- Organizations that hire workers for short-term or occasional care
- Home health care services or home care support service providers
- Agencies that provide personal care or help in homes and residential settings
- Pediatric care services for kids needing home health care
How to Prepare to Apply
More details about how to apply will come soon. However, here are some steps you can take now to prepare:
- If you’re already working in Canada:
– Take a language test (to prove your skills in English or French).
– Have your education assessed (to show your qualifications).
- If you’re not working in Canada:
– Don’t start preparing yet. More information will be shared when the program opens to people outside of Canada.
