Germany Extends Work Opportunities for Foreign Students Pre and Post Degree

International students in Germany can work part-time after nine months of starting their academic courses, while graduates from German universities can apply for permanent residency after two years of work experience. These new regulations aim to provide work opportunities for students and address the country’s demand for skilled workers, with around 770,000 job vacancies available as of 2023.

New skilled worker law in Germany

From March 2023, Germany implemented a new law allowing international students to work while studying there. These students can arrive up to 9 months before their studies commence and work up to 20 hours per week. Additionally, they can enroll in language courses in English, German, or another language of their choice during this time. The new law also enables students to work between 120 to 140 full days per year.

Apprenticeship applicants are allowed to work before & after studies.

Individuals interested in apprenticeships in Germany can now work while they search for one. To qualify, they must be under 35 years old and have a B1-level proficiency in German. They can work up to 20 hours per week during the nine months before and after their apprenticeship training begins.

German Graduates are allowed for Permanent Residency

After graduating from a German university, foreign students can remain in Germany for up to 18 months to search for a job. If they acquire two years of work experience in Germany, they become eligible to apply for permanent residency. However, if they intend to switch professions after graduation, they need to update their visa to either an EU Blue Card or a German Skilled Worker Visa.

770,000 Job Vacancies available in Germany

In December 2023, Germany had 770,301 job openings in different areas. The top 20 jobs included roles like gardening, metalworking, woodworking, and other technical jobs. Some of the best-paying jobs in Germany were in healthcare, sales management, flying (pilots), and law.
