News & FAQ Corner

Here are the eligibility criteria for a super visa, simplified into bullet points for website visitors:

Host Requirements:

  • Your host must be your child or grandchild.
  • They must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian.
  • They must be at least 18 years old, live in Canada, and meet the minimum necessary income.
  • The host must provide a copy of their Canadian citizenship, permanent resident document, or Indian status.
  • A letter of invitation from the host promising financial support during your visit is required.

Financial Criteria:

  • You must calculate your family size and meet or exceed the minimum necessary income.
  • Your child or grandchild’s spouse or common-law partner can co-sign the invitation letter if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Application and Visa Requirements:

  • You must apply for the super visa from outside Canada.
  • The visa must be printed by a visa office outside Canada upon their instructions.
  • You need to pass an immigration medical exam and meet other specific conditions.

Health Insurance Requirements:

  • You must have health insurance from a Canadian company or an approved foreign insurance company.
  • The policy must be valid for at least 1 year from your entry date and provide a minimum of $100,000 emergency coverage.
  • It should cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation, paid in full or with a deposit (no quotes accepted).

Additional Considerations:

  • You cannot include dependents in your application.
  • You must show proof of paid health insurance to a border services officer upon entering Canada.
  • Your visit must be temporary, and you must demonstrate ties to your home country, the purpose of your visit, and your financial stability.

These bullet points summarize the key eligibility criteria for a super visa in Canada, making it easier for website visitors to understand the requirements clearly and succinctly.

A single-entry visa lets you enter Canada only once, while a multiple-entry visa allows you to enter Canada many times as long as the visa is valid.

Note:

  • When you apply for a visitor visa, you are automatically considered for a multiple-entry visa. However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reviews each application and decides which visa to issue.
  • If you have a single-entry visa and leave Canada, you will need a new visa to return, unless you are traveling directly to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon.
  • A multiple-entry visa is valid for up to 10 years or until one month before your passport expires, whichever comes first. With this visa, you can stay in Canada for up to six months each time you enter.

Whether you need documents for transiting through Canada depends on your situation.

There are two main groups of travelers: those who need a visa (from visa-required countries) and those who need an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

Some travelers who need a visa must get a visitor visa if they are:

  • Visiting Canada, even for less than 48 hours
  • Staying in Canada for more than 48 hours while transiting
  • Entering Canada by bus, car, train, boat, or cruise ship

Other visa-required travelers may only need a transit visa if they are:

  • Stopping at a Canadian airport on the way to another country.
  • Connecting between two international flights at a Canadian airport
  • Transiting through Canada in 48 hours or less
  • Without a valid visitor visa

Visa-exempt travelers need an eTA to transit through Canada by air. Those traveling by train, bus, boat, or cruise ship don’t need an eTA but must have the correct travel documents.
