How to extend my Work permit without having new documents!

What do I do if I need to renew my work permit but don’t have the new documents yet?

Many foreign workers don’t realize they can extend their work permits even without their new LMIA and CAQ. These documents prove they’re allowed to work in Canada and are usually submitted with work permit requests.

An LMIA is a request from Canadian employers to hire foreign workers temporarily without harming the job market. It’s sent to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) as part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

On the other hand, the CAQ is provided by the Quebec government to foreign workers and students who meet their entry requirements. This allows them to get work or study permits. Remember, employers in Quebec need both CAQs and LMIAs to hire foreign workers.

How do I renew my work permit without my new LMIA and CAQ, if I need them?

IRCC allows you to request an extension if your work permit expires within two weeks when you apply. However, you still need to prove you have a job offer and that you’ve asked for an LMIA (and CAQ, if necessary). There are various ways to do this, like adding extra documents when applying for the extension.

To show you’ve requested the LMIA and CAQ, you can upload their application submissions. If you applied online, include the confirmation numbers. In the “Details of Intended Work in Canada” section of your application, mention when and where you sent the LMIA/CAQ request, your employer’s name, and the submission confirmation number if available.

When applying online for a Quebec work permit extension, you must upload your CAQ. If you don’t have it yet, you can upload the receipt confirmation number or the CAQ application instead.

What occurs once I obtain my new LMIA and CAQ, if needed?

Within two months of IRCC getting your new work permit application, you need to provide evidence of your new LMIA and CAQ, if needed, to the immigration department. If you don’t do this on time, your work permit application might be rejected. If you’re in Canada and your work permit is ending soon, it might be helpful to talk to an immigration lawyer to help you extend your permit correctly with all the right proof and papers.
