Working Hours in Canada

Work Hours Allowed for International Students in Canada

Immigration Minister Marc Miller increased international students‘ weekly work limit from 20 to 24 hours during academic sessions, ending temporary measures from October 2022. Miller expressed concerns about academic performance and aimed to deter those seeking work over studies. He cited increased living costs, suggesting 24 hours should be enough. During breaks, students can work unlimited hours, but those in summer classes must follow the 20-hour rule.

Are you eligible to work in Canada as an international student?

International students seeking off-campus work in Canada during their academic year must meet certain criteria.

  • They need a valid study permit and full-time enrollment at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Additionally, they must have started their studies and maintain satisfactory progress.
  • Furthermore, enrollment in a program lasting at least six months leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate is required.
  • They must also have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) for legal employment.
  • During academic breaks, students can work unlimited hours if they plan to resume full-time studies in the upcoming semester.

Minister Miller’s media event coincides with the temporary full-time working hours policy for international students ending on April 30. It aims to clarify the government’s stance on extending the policy, introduced due to COVID-19, allowing students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week to address labor shortages. While unlikely to extend beyond April 30, IRCC is considering options like raising off-campus employment hours to 30 per week, with hope for Minister Miller’s announcement. Currently, international students in Canada can work 20 hours per week during classes, with anticipation for a possible increase to 30 hours.
