Extend Your Stay: 3 Options for International Students in Canada
3 Ways for Students from Other Countries in Canada to Stay Longer
In Canada, international students have various options to extend their stay after completing their studies. However, with recent changes in immigration policies and increased competition for permanent residency, students are feeling anxious about their legal status. Nevertheless, extending your stay as a student is achievable with the right information and pathway. To provide clarity, let’s explore the most common and feasible options for international students in Canada. Nonetheless, it’s important to consider your permanent residency options before deciding on any of these pathways to extend your stay.
Extending your status as a Student in Canada
After completing a one-year course, consider enrolling in a second program to extend your study permit. Instead of using your post-graduation work permit right away, opt for program stacking to increase its duration. Choose a Master’s program for better residency prospects. Be aware of new PGWP rules. Apply for a study permit extension based on your new program offer at least 30 days before your permit expires and renew your social insurance and health insurance.
International Students with an Expired PGWP
International students facing an expiring PGWP and lacking enough points for permanent residency can extend their stay as students by enrolling in a new study program. They’ll switch back to student status from PGWP but won’t be eligible for another PGWP after completing this second program. It’s crucial to select a program aligned with in-demand occupations for permanent residency or one that boosts existing residency scores.
Alternatively, students can pursue a closed work permit, requiring a job offer and positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from a Canadian employer. However, this route can be challenging due to job availability and potential high costs associated with obtaining an LMIA. Returning to student status is often a more affordable option.
Extending Your Visit in Canada
International students can also extend their stay by applying for a visitor visa. This visa is typically valid for 10 years or until your passport expires, allowing stays of up to 6 months at a time in Canada. Visitors can request extensions beyond this limit through a visitor record. However, working legally in Canada is not permitted for visitors, and any cash work cannot contribute to permanent residency applications.
Some visitors obtain a U.S. B1/B2 visa, exit Canada for 24 hours, and return for another 6-month stay without needing an extension. While this method provides a legal way to stay in Canada for up to 6 months, planning is essential, especially considering future permanent residency options. Whether through work permits, further education, or visiting, there are various pathways to continue your journey in Canada.
