PR Pathways for International Graduates in Canada (2024)
Get your PR After Graduating a Master’s or PhD Program as an international student in Canada
Students completing master’s or Ph.D. programs in Canada now have an easier route to permanent residence (PR). On Feb 15, 2024, IRCC launched PGWP policy, part of broader changes to Canada’s student system. Policy grants 3-year PGWP to master’s grads from Canadian DLIs, including ≤2-year programs.
How does this help students stay in Canada permanently?
The PGWP is valuable because it lets international students work in Canada after finishing a program at a DLI. This Canadian work experience is crucial for PR applications because many immigration pathways in Canada either need or reward such experience. For instance, the Express Entry system, a popular way to apply for PR, gives extra points for Canadian work experience. So, the new PGWP policy will make it simpler for eligible students to get PR because it gives them more time to gain important Canadian work experience, which boosts their immigration application.
Other ways IRCC makes it easier for master’s and PhD students to immigrate to Canada
In addition to the value of master’s or Ph.D. degrees for Canadian immigration, the Express Entry CRS system favors higher education levels. Master’s and Ph.D. graduates receive the highest CRS scores for education. Higher CRS points boost ITA chances for Canadian PR, while many provinces offer tailored PNP streams for graduate students.
