New Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Opens May 21st, 2024
The 2024 intake for sponsoring parents and grandparents will commence on May 21st
Starting May 21, 2024, Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply to bring their parents or grandparents to live with them through sponsorship. The government plans to invite 35,700 potential sponsors to apply, aiming for 20,500 complete applications. This year, the government will send out 5,500 more invitations compared to last year. Invitations will be sent out over about 2 weeks, starting May 21st. However, new sponsors won’t be able to express interest at this time.
The immigration department will keep randomly selecting sponsors from the forms people submitted in 2020. They’ve been doing this every year since 2021, and they’ll do it again in 2024. If you filled out a form in 2020 but haven’t received a selection in the past three years, you should check your email. Additionally, if you were selected in 2023, you must submit your application online.
Eligibility for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship 2024
Citizenship or Residency Status
- You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or an Indian enrolled under the Canadian Indian Act who is at least eighteen years old.
Financial Eligibility
- You need to fulfil the financial requirement set by IRCC.
- This involves having sufficient funds to support the family you wish to sponsor.
- You must provide acceptable proof of income for the past three years.
Submission of Interest-to-Sponsor Form
- You are required to have submitted an interest-to-sponsor form for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2020.
Income Requirement for Sponsoring Parents and Grandparents in 2024
For those unable to participate in the sponsorship to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada, they have another option called a super visa. This visa is valid for ten years and allows multiple entries.
Moreover, super visa holders can stay in Canada for up to 5 years continuously without needing to leave. They can stay for a maximum of five years at a stretch.
Furthermore, they can request a 2-year extension after completing their initial 5-year stay.
These adjustments enable longer reunions between Canadian citizens or permanent residents and their parents or grandparents.
When will families be able to apply to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada in 2024?
The IRCC officially announced that to achieve their target of receiving 20,500 applications in 2024, they will send out 35,700 invitations to apply for permanent residency through the Canada Parents and Grandparents Program, beginning on May 21, 2024.
What’s the present turnaround time for sponsoring parents and grandparents?
The most recent official IRCC processing report states that parents and grandparents (PGP) sponsorship applications across Canada now have an average processing time of 20 months, except for Quebec. Notably, PGP applicants planning to live in Quebec face an average processing period of around 33 months.
