Canada May Add New Job Categories to Make PR Easier in 2026

What Is Being Planned?

To begin with, the Canadian government is thinking about adding new job-based categories to its Express Entry system by the year 2026. These new categories would make it easier for certain types of foreign professionals to get permanent residence in Canada.

Who Might Benefit from the New Categories?

According to the proposal, three types of professionals would be targeted:

Leadership (Senior Managers)

In this category, Canada wants to attract people who lead teams and manage organizations. The belief is that these professionals could help improve productivity, bring new ideas, and help Canada grow economically.

2. Scientists and Researchers

Next, Canada is considering prioritizing researchers and scientists. The goal here is to boost innovation and scientific development, which in turn could support long-term economic growth.

3. Military Professionals

Finally, Canada is also looking at making it easier for military personnel from allied countries to immigrate, so they can join and support the Canadian Armed Forces.

What Else Will Continue in 2026?

In addition to the new categories above, some existing priorities will likely remain in place:

Francophone Immigration

Canada will likely continue giving preference to French-speaking applicants, especially outside the province of Quebec.

Sectors with Long-Term Labour Shortages

Furthermore, the Express Entry system will still focus on these in-demand fields:

  • Healthcare
  • Skilled trades (like construction)
  • Education
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food

What Does This Mean for International Students?

Additionally, the government uses the Express Entry categories to decide which college or university programs should make graduates eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

Right now:

  • 119 fields of study are still eligible for the PGWP
  • 178 fields were removed earlier this year

So, if the Express Entry categories change in 2026, the eligible study programs could also change. Fortunately, graduates of bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs will still be exempt from these restrictions.

What Is Category-Based Selection?

Category-based selection was introduced in 2023 to help Canada target people with specific in-demand skills.

Currently (in 2025), the main Express Entry categories include:

  • French language skills
  • Healthcare
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • STEM jobs
  • Trades
  • Education (added this year)

Among these, French language proficiency, healthcare, trades, and education are the top priorities.

Moreover, category-based draws usually have lower CRS scores compared to general draws.
