New UK Student Visa Rules You Should Know in 2025
UK’s Latest Policy Changes Could Impact International Students
Studying in the UK offers global exposure, top universities, and strong career opportunities. But before applying, students should know about recent visa changes.
1. Student Visa Financial Requirements Are Increasing
From November 11, 2025, new students applying for a UK Student Visa will need to show higher financial proof.
You must show you can support yourself during your studies:
- £1,529 per month if studying in London
- £1,171 per month if studying outside London
This is a small increase from the current amount — £1,483 and £1,136 respectively.
You can check your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to confirm if your university is in the London area.
These changes apply only to new applicants. Current students don’t need to show extra funds, but they should still prepare for higher living costs.
2. Graduate Route Work Visa Will Be Shorter
The Graduate Route lets international students stay and work in the UK after their studies.
Currently, bachelor’s and master’s graduates can stay for up to two years, and PhD holders can stay for three years.
From January 1, 2027, the duration for bachelor’s and master’s students will reduce to 18 months. PhD graduates can still stay for up to three years.
This change affects both current and future students, as many will graduate after 2027.
3. The UK Still Welcomes Global Talent
The UK remains a top choice for education, research, and innovation. Its degrees are recognized worldwide, and employers value UK graduates.
The country also produces a large share of top scientific research, showing its strong academic quality.
Entrepreneurs can explore the Innovator Founder Visa, which supports those building unique and scalable businesses in the UK.
Despite the shorter Graduate Route, students can still:
- Work in most jobs
- Be self-employed
- Travel in and out of the UK
- Apply later for a Skilled Worker Visa or Health and Care Visa for long-term opportunities
Conclusion
The UK’s new rules aim to balance education quality and immigration control.
International students should stay updated, plan their finances carefully, and seek help from their university’s International Office or the UKCISA website.
With the right preparation, your UK study journey can still be a rewarding experience.
