Canada Strengthens Support for Victims of Abuse and Trafficking
Commitment to Protecting Victims
The Canadian government remains committed to protecting victims of human trafficking and family violence. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to strengthen safeguards for vulnerable foreign nationals in Canada. The goal is simple: ensure victims can access help without fear or barriers.
New Measures to Support Victims
As of today, IRCC has expanded protections for victims of human trafficking and family violence. Victims and their dependents can now receive an initial Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) valid for at least 12 months, with limited exceptions.
In addition, IRCC has removed several application fees. These include fees for work permits, study permits, and biometrics. This change helps victims focus on rebuilding their lives instead of financial stress.
Canada’s Longstanding Support for Trafficking Victims
Canada has supported victims of human trafficking for many years. Since 2006, eligible individuals have been able to apply for a Victims of Human Trafficking TRP (VTIP TRP).
This permit provides temporary legal status in Canada. It also allows access to work or study opportunities. Victims receive health care coverage through the Interim Federal Health Program. These supports allow individuals to focus on recovery and safety.
Support for Victims of Family Violence
In 2019, Canada introduced special TRPs for victims of family violence. These permits help individuals leave abusive situations safely. They also protect victims from losing their immigration status during a crisis.
Making a Lasting Difference
Human trafficking and family violence affect more than just individuals. They impact families, communities, and society.
Through these new measures, IRCC removes more barriers to safety and support. Victims can stabilize their lives and access essential services. Most importantly, they can begin the healing process with dignity and security.
