Canada has introduced stricter financial verification rules for international students applying for a study permit. Although the required proof of funds has not changed, immigration officers will now examine applicants’ financial documents more carefully before approving a study permit.

Canada Introduces Stricter Financial Checks

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently updated its study permit assessment guidelines for immigration officers. As a result, officers must now carefully review both the amount of money applicants have and where that money comes from.

In simple terms, applicants must clearly prove that they can afford their tuition, living expenses, and other costs throughout their studies in Canada.

Officers Will Review the Source of Funds More Carefully

Previously, officers mainly carried out detailed financial reviews in high-risk cases. However, the updated guidelines require officers to examine the financial information in every study permit application, regardless of the applicant’s country.

Moreover, officers can request additional financial or employment documents from applicants or their family members whenever they need more information.

These additional checks help officers identify genuine students who can financially support themselves during their studies in Canada.

Applicants May Need to Submit More Bank Statements

The updated guidelines also change how officers review bank statements.

Earlier, applicants generally submitted four months of bank statements. Now, officers may ask for six months of bank statements, including the month before the application was submitted.

By reviewing a longer financial history, officers can better understand whether an applicant has stable and genuine financial support.

Applicants Can Now Submit More Types of Financial Documents

IRCC has also expanded the list of acceptable proof of funds documents.

Applicants can now use additional financial documents, including:

• Pension income
• Rental property income

At the same time, IRCC removed bank drafts that can be converted into Canadian dollars from its list of suggested proof of funds documents.

Study Permit Renewals Will Also Require Financial Checks

The new rules also apply to students who want to extend their study permits.

When reviewing an extension application, officers will check whether the student has enough money to support themselves during the first year after the extension.

Therefore, students should prepare updated financial documents before applying for a study permit renewal.

The Proof of Funds Requirement Remains the Same

Although Canada has strengthened its financial verification process, it has not increased the minimum proof of funds requirement.

Applicants must still show enough money to cover:

• Tuition fees
• Travel expenses to and from Canada
• Living expenses

Several factors determine how much money an applicant must show, including:

• Family size
• Whether the student plans to study inside or outside Quebec
• The study permit stream under which they apply

For example, a single applicant studying outside Quebec under the regular study permit stream must currently show CAD $22,895 for living expenses, in addition to tuition fees and travel costs.

Why Has Canada Introduced These Changes?

Canada introduced these updates as part of its broader efforts to strengthen the country’s immigration system.

Earlier in 2026, Canada’s Auditor General reported that the immigration department flagged more than 153,000 international students for possible non-compliance between 2023 and 2024. However, the department had enough resources to investigate only about 2,000 cases each year.

As a result, Canada now focuses more on verifying study permit applications before granting approval.

Other Immigration Changes in 2026

Along with stricter financial checks, Canada has introduced several other immigration reforms.

For example:

• The government now has the authority to cancel certain immigration documents and terminate groups of applications under specific legal circumstances.
• The government has also introduced new asylum rules for certain applicants.
• In addition, IRCC has strengthened language test verification by adding extra identity checks, including photo comparisons.

Together, these changes aim to strengthen the integrity and fairness of Canada’s immigration system.

Fewer International Students Are Arriving in Canada

The stricter immigration measures have already started affecting international student numbers.

Between January and May 2026, Canada welcomed 70% fewer international students than it did during the same period in 2024. This represents a decline of more than 225,000 students.

Overall, this trend reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to better manage the number of temporary residents entering the country.
