Canada’s New Rules to Help Family Immigration
Canada’s New Reforms for Stronger Family Class Immigration
Canada has long prioritized family unity as a core value of its immigration system. On May 26, 2023, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced major reforms to strengthen Family Class Immigration.
Through these changes, Canada aims to reunite families faster. Moreover, the reforms reduce processing delays and expand opportunities for spouses and dependents to live and work together in Canada. As a result, family reunification has become more accessible and efficient.
Faster Processing for Spousal TRV Applicants
First and foremost, Canada has significantly reduced processing times for spousal Temporary Resident Visa applications. Previously, long wait times often delayed family reunions. However, under the new measures, IRCC now processes spousal TRVs within approximately 30 days.
Consequently, spouses can reunite much faster. At the same time, these improvements promote emotional well-being and family stability across Canada.
New Tools for Spousal TRV Applications
In addition to faster processing, the government has introduced new tools designed specifically for spousal TRV applicants. These tools simplify application steps and provide clearer guidance throughout the process.
As a result, applicants can better understand requirements and avoid common mistakes. Therefore, the overall experience for families seeking reunification has improved significantly.
Open Work Permits for Spouses and Family Class Applicants
Another major reform includes the introduction of a new open work permit for spousal and family class candidates. Under this policy, spouses and dependent children living in Canada with their sponsor can apply for an open work permit.
Importantly, this permit allows them to work in Canada while their permanent residence application is under review. Consequently, families gain financial stability and independence during the waiting period.
Extensions for Expiring Open Work Permits
Furthermore, the Canadian government recognized challenges faced by families whose open work permits were nearing expiry. Therefore, it launched a special extension program.
Under this initiative, approximately 25,000 individuals can extend their open work permits for an additional 18 months. This group includes spouses and dependents of temporary workers, international students, and permanent residence applicants.
Notably, the government offers this extension free of charge. As a result, families gain continuity and peace of mind. However, applicants had to opt in by June 28, 2023, to benefit from this policy.
What These Reforms Mean for Families
Overall, these reforms provide families with more flexibility and stronger support. By speeding up processes and expanding work rights, Canada reinforces its commitment to family reunification.
Moreover, these changes allow families to build stable lives together while navigating the immigration process. Therefore, Canada continues to stand out as a family-friendly immigration destination.
