CRS Score Change in Canada.

Canada can enhance Express Entry by updating the CRS Calculator.

Canada has the opportunity to enhance the Express Entry system by updating its CRS calculator. Recent studies reveal flaws, prompting the need for revisions. For example, the C.D. Howe Institute’s report recommends adjusting criteria and weights. In 2023, IRCC shifted its focus to prioritize candidates from labor-shortage sectors. However, this change could lead to adverse effects such as discouraging investment and raising unemployment.

Furthermore, the reforms have lowered the quality of skilled immigrants entering Canada by reducing cut-off points to meet quotas. Additionally, the recent increase in temporary residents may negatively affect permanent residency candidates and the selection process. Similarly, the BCA suggests reassessing points allocation, particularly considering current employment earnings, to improve accuracy in the CRS calculator over the next three years.

What is an express entry?

Express Entry is a system that was established in 2015 to meet Canada’s changing economic and job market requirements. Consequently, it manages three immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Workers Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

Candidates are evaluated using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This system considers factors like work experience, language proficiency, occupation, education, and more. Consequently, candidates with higher CRS scores have a greater chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

Suggestions from the Business Council of Alberta

IRCC, with the help of experts, can improve immigrant selection by adjusting points and verifying overseas income. Moreover, Canada should prioritize economic potential in the CRS system and evaluate the value of “Additional Points.” Additionally, category-based drawings should be phased out for fairer selection, and minimum selection criteria should prioritize quality over quantity. Furthermore, the eligibility criteria for economic immigration should be simplified to ensure clarity for applicants.

Suggestions put forward by the C.D. Howe Institute regarding the Express Entry CRS Calculator.

To improve CRS and Express Entry, Canada should refine selection criteria for skilled immigrants, establish a minimum point threshold, and consider factors like pre-admission earnings and language proficiency. This would ensure better integration into the job market and enhance outcomes for applicants and their partners.

What are the annual immigration targets for the Express Entry system?

Canada aims to welcome 110,770 new permanent residents in 2024 via the Express Entry system, as per the latest available annual immigration levels plan.
