Planning to Work in Canada After Graduation? Start Early!

If you’re an international student and want to work in Canada after finishing your studies, you’ll likely need a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). However, not all study programs make you eligible for it, so it’s important to plan ahead.

What Are “Field of Study” Requirements?

As of November 1, 2024, the Canadian government made some changes. Now, only students in specific fields (areas of study) at certain levels can get a PGWP. This is because the government wants to make sure international graduates are trained in areas that are in high demand in the Canadian job market.

Who Does This Apply To?

These new field of study rules only apply if you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024. Here’s who needs to follow them:

How to Make Sure Your Program Is PGWP-Eligible

If your program does require field of study eligibility, follow these two steps:

Step 1: Find the Right CIP Title and Code

CIP stands for Classification of Instructional Programs. It’s a system used to categorize all study programs in Canada. Here’s how to find your program’s correct CIP code:

  • Go to Statistics Canada’s CIP page
  • Search for your program title or subject
  • Read the description to make sure it matches your actual program

Tip: Program names can vary, so don’t go by the title alone—always read the description.

Also, check your school’s (DLI’s) website. Many provide the exact CIP code for each program. If you’re unsure, contact your school directly.

Step 2: Check If the Code Is PGWP-Eligible

Once you have your CIP code and title, use the online PGWP eligibility tool to see if your program is on the approved list.

Right now, the following fields of study are eligible:

  • Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • Education
  • Health Care and Social Services
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  • Trades
  • Transportation

Note: This list may change in early 2026, so always double-check.

Language Requirements for PGWP

In addition to studying the right program, you must also meet language skill requirements in English or French. Here’s what’s required:

General Rules for All PGWP Applicants

Whether or not the field of study rules apply to you, every international student must also meet these basic requirements:

  1. Finish a program at a PGWP-eligible school (DLI) that lasted at least 8 months (or 900 hours in Quebec).
  2. Be a full-time student in every semester of your program.
  3. Apply for your PGWP within 180 days (6 months) after receiving confirmation of graduation.
  4. Hold a valid study permit at some point during those 180 days.

Conclusion

To avoid problems later, it’s best to:

  • Research your program’s eligibility before applying
  • Talk to your school if you’re unsure
  • Double-check the CIP code and PGWP list

Planning early can make the difference between being able to work in Canada after graduation or not.
