UK Student Visa Guide for International Students
Thinking of Studying in the UK?
The UK continues to be a top choice for international students, thanks to its globally recognised universities, strong academic standards, and student-friendly lifestyle. Every year, lakhs of students choose the UK to build their future through education.
If you’re planning to study there, the first and most important step is understanding the UK Student Visa.
Do International Students Need a UK Visa?
Yes. If you are not a UK citizen, you must apply for a student visa before starting your studies.
However, the type of visa you need depends on your age and where you plan to study.
Choosing the Right Student Visa
To begin with:
- If you are 16 years or older, you’ll usually apply for a Student Visa
- If you are between 4 and 17 years old and studying at a private school, you’ll need a Child Student Visa
For younger students, extra documents are required, such as parental permission, proof of funds, and accommodation details.
When and How to Apply
Once you receive your university offer, you can apply online for your visa.
- Applying from outside the UK? You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts
- Applying from within the UK? You can apply up to 3 months before
In most cases:
- Outside-UK applications take around 3 weeks
- Inside-UK applications may take around 8 weeks
That said, processing time can increase if document checks or interviews are needed.
CAS: The Key to Your Visa Application
Before applying, you must receive a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your university.
Think of CAS as your official permission slip to apply for a student visa.
Without it, your visa application cannot move forward.
Make sure to apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS.
What Can You Study on a Student Visa?
A UK Student Visa covers a wide range of courses, including:
- Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees
- Foundation and pathway programmes
- Certain part-time postgraduate courses
- Approved English language courses
Some specialised subjects may require additional approval, depending on the course level.
Documents You’ll Need
Next, let’s talk paperwork. While the exact list may vary, students generally need:
- A valid passport
- CAS number
- Proof of English language ability
- Proof of funds
- Biometric details
- Health and background documents (if required)
Students under 18 will also need parental consent documents.
Biometric Details and Digital Visa (eVisa)
After applying, you’ll either:
- Visit a visa centre for fingerprints and a photo, or
- Verify your identity digitally using an official app
Once approved, you’ll receive an eVisa, which works as your digital proof of permission to live and study in the UK.
English Language Rules Explained Simply
To study in the UK, you must show that you can understand and communicate in English.
Your institution will assess this, usually through an approved English test.
Remember, visa language rules can be different from university admission requirements—so both must be met.
Showing You Can Afford to Study
Another important step is proving you have enough funds to cover:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses
- Daily costs while studying
The required money must be available in your account for 28 continuous days before applying.
As of 2026:
- Students in London need higher funds
- Students outside London need slightly less
Extra funds are required if family members are joining you.
Healthcare While Studying in the UK
Students staying longer than six months must pay an Immigration Health Surcharge during the visa process.
This gives you access to the UK’s public healthcare system during your stay, which is a big relief for international students.
Can You Take Family Along?
Currently, only postgraduate research students are allowed to bring dependants.
If permitted, you must show proof of your relationship and additional financial support.
How Long Can You Stay in the UK?
Your visa usually covers the entire length of your course.
- Longer courses allow early entry
- Degree students can usually stay up to 5 years
- Non-degree courses allow shorter stays
Extensions are possible if you continue studying.
Staying Back After Studies: Graduate Visa
Finally, if you wish to gain work experience after graduating, the Graduate Visa is a popular option.
- Applications before 31 December 2026 allow up to 2 years of stay
- Doctoral students get 3 years
- From January 2027, the duration will reduce to 18 months (except for PhD graduates)
