Nova Scotia Implements Federal Cap on New International Student Applications.
Nova Scotia Follows Federal Limits on International Student Applications
Nova Scotia has released its 2024 international student intake numbers after the federal government set a cap on new study permits. This year, the province can issue 12,900 study permits, which is much lower than last year’s figure. In 2023, for example, more than 16,000 international students studied full-time in Nova Scotia. Consequently, the province will welcome roughly 7,000 fewer new students.
How Nova Scotia Will Distribute Study Permits in 2024
Nova Scotia is allocating these permits across 32 designated learning institutions. To ensure fairness, the province divided the permits as follows:
- 11,565 permits for universities and Nova Scotia Community College
- 710 permits for private career colleges
- 526 permits for language schools
- 99 additional permits for unexpected or special circumstances
Moreover, the Minister of Advanced Education has asked the federal government for more permits. Since Canada reduced its overall study permit levels for 2024, each province must carefully assign permits using Provincial Attestation Letters (PALs). These PALs are essential for students applying for a federal study permit.
Prince Edward Island’s Allocation for 2024
Prince Edward Island (PEI) has also announced its distribution. The province received 2,000 study permits, which it will issue to three institutions:
- Collège de l’Île – 105 permits
- Holland College – 710 permits
- University of Prince Edward Island – 1,185 permits
In addition, PEI’s Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population will first issue PALs to these institutions. Afterwards, the institutions will give the letters to international students so they can apply for federal permits.
How Other Provinces Are Allocating Study Permits
Ontario
Ontario plans to allocate 96% of its study permits to public universities and colleges. The remaining 4% will go to language schools, private universities, and other education providers. However, Ontario has not yet confirmed the exact number of permits it received from the federal government.
British Columbia
British Columbia, on the other hand, is distributing 83,000 study permits across its institutions. The province will allocate 53% to public DLIs and 47% to private DLIs, creating an almost even split.
