What This Means for Applicants

Alberta has continued its active immigration approach in 2026. Between May 1 and May 13, 2026, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) held four new immigration draws and invited 1,051 candidates to apply for provincial nomination.

These invitations mainly targeted healthcare professionals, technology workers, and individuals interested in living and working in rural Alberta communities.

Moreover, Alberta has already conducted 36 immigration draws in 2026, showing that the province remains highly active in selecting skilled immigrants.

Alberta’s Latest Immigration Draws – May 2026

During these draws, invitations were issued through four different immigration pathways.

1. Alberta Opportunity Stream Led the Selection

The Alberta Opportunity Stream received the largest share of invitations.

  • Draw Date: May 6, 2026
  • Invitations Issued: 832
  • Minimum Score Required: 54

As a result, this stream alone accounted for nearly 79% of all invitations issued in May.

This stream generally supports individuals who already meet Alberta’s work and residency eligibility requirements.

2. Tech Professionals Continued to Receive Strong Support

Alberta also continued prioritizing technology talent through the Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway.

  • Draw Date: May 7, 2026
  • Invitations Issued: 146
  • Minimum Score Required: 57

Therefore, skilled tech workers remain an important focus area for Alberta’s immigration plans.

3. Healthcare Workers Remained a Key Priority

Healthcare professionals also received invitations through the Dedicated Health Care Pathway – Express Entry.

  • Draw Date: May 13, 2026
  • Invitations Issued: 61
  • Minimum Score Required: 57

This reflects Alberta’s ongoing effort to strengthen its healthcare workforce.

4. Rural Communities Also Received Immigration Support

Through the Rural Renewal Stream, Alberta continued supporting smaller communities.

  • Draw Date: May 1, 2026
  • Invitations Issued: 12
  • Minimum Score Required: 50

Although the number was smaller, rural immigration remains one of Alberta’s important long-term priorities.

Why Is Alberta Focusing on These Categories?

According to Alberta’s 2026 immigration priorities, the province is actively selecting candidates in:

  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Rural community development

Because of this strategy, recent draws closely align with Alberta’s labour market and economic needs.

Alberta Still Has Thousands of Nomination Spaces Available

Every year, the federal government allocates a limited number of provincial nomination spaces.

For 2026, Alberta received:

  • Total Allocation: 6,403 nominations
  • Used as of May 14: 2,191
  • Remaining: 4,212 nominations

In other words, more than half of Alberta’s nomination spaces are still available for upcoming draws.

Current Competition Levels in Alberta Immigration

Alberta also released updated numbers showing how many candidates are currently waiting.

As of May 14:

  • 40,161 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) were active in the pool
  • This was 1,602 fewer than the previous update

Interestingly, nearly 64% of all EOIs belong to the Alberta Opportunity Stream, making it the most competitive category.

1,303 applications awaiting final decisions

Breakdown:

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream → 446
  • Rural Renewal Stream → 197

At the same time, with 4,212 nomination spaces still available, many opportunities may remain open for eligible candidates throughout the rest of 2026.
