Gordie Howe International Bridge Officially Opens Between Canada and the U.S.

Traveling between Canada and the United States has become easier. On July 27, 2026, the Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to traffic. The new bridge connects Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, and offers travelers another convenient border crossing.

A New Border Crossing for Travelers

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is now the third border crossing between Windsor and Detroit. It joins the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor–Detroit Tunnel, which often experience heavy traffic.

Express Lanes for Faster Border Crossing

Additionally, the new port of entry includes dedicated express lanes.

• FAST lanes for approved commercial transporters.

A Dedicated Path for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Starting August 5, 2026, pedestrians and cyclists can also use the bridge through a separate multi-use pathway.

More importantly, this is the first Windsor–Detroit crossing that allows people to walk or cycle between Canada and the United States.

Toll Fees

Travelers must pay a toll to use the bridge.

The toll rates are:

• CAD $8 for standard passenger vehicles.
• CAD $12 for large passenger vehicles, oversized vehicles, and commercial trucks.

However, pedestrians and cyclists can use the multi-use pathway free of charge.

Canada’s Most Advanced Land Border Crossing

According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Gordie Howe International Bridge is now Canada’s largest and most technologically advanced land border crossing.

A Project That Took More Than 20 Years

Canada and the United States worked together on this project for more than two decades.
