New Measures to Enhance and Protect the International Student Program Announced

•  Ontario and British Columbia are taking steps to make post-secondary education better in their provinces.
•  Ontario is teaming up with partners and the federal government to stop recruiters who trick international students with false job and citizenship promises.
•  They want to make sure international students study programs that match what jobs Ontario needs.
•  Ontario will check programs with lots of international students to ensure they are good and meet the local job needs.
•  Ontario plans to enhance the response rate to student outcome surveys to ensure better academic outcomes by implementing new measures.

New Measures in British Columbia

•  British Columbia is working to make education better for international students.
•  They won’t allow new schools for international students for the next two years.
•  Right now, B.C. has the third-highest number of these schools in Canada.
•  Only certain schools, called Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs), can accept international students.
•  Each province has different rules for schools to become a DLI because education is managed by each province.

Housing for international students in Canada 

•  Ontario now requires all colleges and universities to promise housing for international students.
•  The federal government of Canada is offering low-cost loans for student housing, part of a $40 billion program.
•  Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Housing, says more student housing will lower housing costs for everyone in student-heavy cities.
•  Having enough housing for international students is a big concern, and the new cap on visas aims to create a stronger and more supportive program.

Checking and Improving Private Schools and Programs in Canada

Ontario is stopping new partnerships between public and private colleges and making sure existing ones are better monitored. This comes as certain programs at private colleges linked with public colleges face changes in eligibility for work permits due to increased international student enrolment and less oversight compared to public colleges.

British Columbia is checking private degree programs to make sure they meet higher standards for quality, job market needs, resources, and student support. They’re also setting language requirements for students in private training institutions to better prepare new international students for their education and careers in British Columbia.
