October 2023 Climate Action Incentive Payment

In a recent update, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed that the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP) was issued on October 13, 20, and 23, 2023. As a result, eligible Canadian taxpayers received their quarterly payments during these dates.

If you meet the income and eligibility requirements for Canadian tax credits, you generally qualify for CAIP. Moreover, newcomers to Canada can also receive this benefit. This includes permanent residents, protected persons such as refugees, and temporary residents like international students and workers. However, newcomers must apply to receive the payment.

What Is the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP)?

The Climate Action Incentive Payment is a tax-free amount that helps individuals and families offset the costs of federal carbon pricing. In other words, it supports households affected by pollution pricing.

Importantly, CAIP payments are issued every three months. Since the payment is tax-free, recipients do not need to report it as income.

Provinces Covered Under CAIP

Currently, residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario receive CAIP payments. In addition, starting July 1, 2023, the program expanded to include New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

As a result, more Canadians now benefit from the federal carbon pricing rebate.

Who Is Eligible for the Climate Action Incentive Payment?

To qualify for CAIP, you must meet several conditions.

First, you must be at least 19 years old at the beginning of the month when CRA issues the payment. Additionally, you must be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes.

Next, you must live in a province where CAIP applies on the first day of the payment month. These provinces include Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick, starting July 1, 2023.

However, individuals under 19 may still qualify in certain cases. For example, you may be eligible if you have or previously had a spouse or common-law partner. Similarly, you may qualify if you are a parent or were a parent and lived with your child at some point.

Because eligibility can vary, you should always confirm your status directly with the CRA.
